Ecclesiastes: the divine disruption (2/8/2009-5/31/2009)

Scripture: Ecclesiastes
Qoholet, the writer of Ecclesiastes, begins his treatise on the meaning of life by saying that "All is meaningless." In other words, all that mankind pursues "under the sun" or apart from God's hand is absolutely meaningless. Nothing in life has inherent value, but only a contingent value ... contingent upon that pursuit's relationship to God. Beginning with the stark realization that nothing has value apart from God, Ecclesiastes moves the reader through a series of disruptions intended to pry the hands off of this life to find ultimate meaning solely in relationship with God.
